How to Move A Layer in Procreate - Plus More!
Share
Learning how to move a layer in Procreate is important. It’s an easy thing to do, but it’s very important; it changes what your drawing looks like. Two more important things to learn are how to move multiple layers in Procreate and how to move layers in Procreate to another canvas.
Before we learn how to do those things, you should know why moving layers is important. The order your layers are in changes what you see in the drawing. In Procreate, the top layer’s contents are always above all the others; whatever is in the top layer will be visible, and anything in the bottom layers will be hidden behind it. The bottom layer’s contents are always behind all of the other layers’ contents.
These two pictures explain why the order of layers is so important.
When the red circle layer was at the top, the red circle was above the blue circle; when the blue circle layer was above the red circle layer, the opposite happened.
Now let’s learn these three things: how to move a layer, how to move multiple layers, and how to move a layer to another canvas.
Here’s how you move a layer in Procreate: Hold your finger on the layer you wish to move for a few seconds. The layer will bob after about 2-3 seconds. Then, without letting go of the layer, move your finger with the layer up or down to the spot where you want the layer to be. When the layer is there, simply let go of it and it’s done.
If you don’t like how the layers are composed, simply click ‘undo’ or move your layer again.
Here’s how you move multiple layers: Make sure that one of the layers you want to move is selected (this layer will be blue). For each layer that you want to move, put your finger on it and slide to the right (do this one at a time); that layer will turn a dull blue. Once you’ve done this to all of the desired layers, hold your finger on any of the layers you want to move. Once the layers bob, move them to the desired spot and release them by lifting your finger off of the screen.
Here’s how you move a layer to another canvas: Select the layer you want to move (it will be blue). Go to Actions (looks like a wrench in the top left corner) > Add > Copy. Go to the canvas you want to add the layer to. Go to Actions > Add > Paste. Your layer should have appeared; adjust as needed using the Selection tool.
Now you know how to move one layer, how to move multiple layers, and even how to move a layer to another canvas!
