How To Prep Wood To Paint

How To Prep Wood To Paint

Do you know how to prepare wood, in this case, to paint? (I’m using this method to paint wood with acrylic.) It’s really not that hard, but if you don’t know how, you could ruin your whole entire painting! Here are simple steps to prepare your wood to paint:

1. Sand your wood down.

Use sandpaper to finely grind your wood down until smooth, with no chance of splinters. Make sure you get around the edges and the back.

2. Seal and protect the wood

This is VERY IMPORTANT, in fact, vital! If you don’t seal your wood, it will crack and destroy your painting! Adhere Polyurethane to the wood and it will seal and protect your wood.  If you don’t add polyurethane to your wood in time and it cracks, then use clay to fill it in and smooth it out, and then add polyurethane. Make sure the polyurethane is dry before moving on.

3. Add A Clear Coat or A White Coat (Only add if you are going to make it into a painting, like mine)

I now suggest spray painting a white or clear coat so that the wood doesn’t soak up the paint. Once it’s dry, you draw your design on and start painting!

Thank you and enjoy!
