What Is Smudge in Procreate - the Procreate Smudge Tool

What is Smudge in Procreate - or, really, what is the Smudge tool? Where is it? What does it do? How do I use it? These are questions you may be asking and that will be answered in this blog post.
The Smudge tool (I refer to it just as Smudge) is considered a painting tool in Procreate. Smudge, believe it or not, smudges, which means it smears and blurs. I consider Smudge to be Procreate’s blending tool. However, it’s harder to get a smoother blend with Smudge, which is why you may want a brush that blends (if you’re looking for a brush like that, find it here).
Where is Smudge located? Smudge looks like a hand with a finger out. It is located to the right of the painting tool, which is in the top right corner of the screen.
How do you use Smudge? Tap on the Smudge tool (it should turn blue) and then you can use it simply by putting your finger on the screen and going over what you would like to smudge.
There’s one more important thing you need to know about, because it is vital in how Smudge works. This thing is the brush attached Smudge. Based on the brush, that is how Smudge smudges. For example, in the picture below are two smudges, each made with Smudge, but with a different brush.
You’ll notice the brush impacts how the smudge looks. The Sponge brush (this brush is not included with Procreate) makes the smudge look spongy while the Medium Hard Brush (this brush is included with Procreate) looks smoother.
How do you change the brush for Smudge? Once you’ve chosen the Smudge tool (it’ll be blue), if you tap on Smudge, the brush library will appear. This is where you can change the brush.
That’s what I have for you regarding the Smudge tool. I hope you enjoyed!
