How to convert a photo to a line drawing in Procreate - easy guide for beginners and pros

This blog post about how to convert a photo to a line drawing on Procreate was made during Procreate version 5.3.5.

Do you want to turn a photo into a line drawing? Here’s an easy way to do that on Procreate! Simply follow the instructions below and your picture will turn into a line drawing!

1. Import photo

First, you need to import the photo. Tap Actions (looks like a wrench) and click insert a photo.

2. Duplicate the photo.

Tap Layers (which looks like two squares) and duplicate the first layer. To duplicate a layer, put your finger on the right side of the layer and swipe from right to left. Duplicate should be one of the options that shows up.

3. Make the second layer black and white.

Make sure the second layer (the top layer) is blue, which means it is your current layer. Now, tap Adjustments (looks like a wand). Tap the ‘Hue, Saturation, Brightness’ button. On the saturation slider, slide it all the way to the left. The drawing should turn black and white.

4. Duplicate the layer.

Duplicate the black and white layer. Make sure the top layer is your current layer (if it is your current layer, it will be blue).

5. Change the blend mode.

Tap Layers. Click the small ‘N’ on the top layer. A menu should pop out beneath it. Scroll down the menu until you find ‘Divide’. Click ‘Divide’. The canvas should turn almost completely white. Tap the top layer to get rid of the menu.

6. Blur

Tap Adjustments. Tap ‘Gaussian Blur’. Drag your finger across the screen to increase the blur. When you blur the layer, a line drawing of the photo should appear. At the top of the screen will be a percentage representing how much blur there is. I suggest this percentage be somewhere between 4-10%, but I would mess around with it and adjust it to your liking. Click the Adjustments button to save the changes.

Then, you’re done. You’re finished with your line drawing!
